Customer:

Cincinnati-based not-for-profit 1N5, which serves to increase awareness and education about mental health in teens and adults.

Problem:

In March of 2020, America’s Disaster Distress Hotline reported a 891% spike in calls from citizens. Where a mental health crisis had long been brewing in the United States, the arrival of the global pandemic thrust an existing issue into catastrophic territory. The leaders of Cincinnati-based not-for-profit 1N5, which serves to increase awareness and education about mental health in teens and adults, knew that rapid action would be required to find solution-based initiatives around these pressing issues.

Solution:

Gathering a diverse group of community youth and mentors, Cincinnati-based not-for-profit 1N5 challenged teams to find solutions for the question, “How might we help students to invest in their mental wellness” — a particularly pressing issue during this time of heightened change and mental pressure. To expedite and accentuate this process, the group used the Impact by ExperiencePointWorkshop, a modular, live, virtual sprint, guided by the principles of human-centered design.

Result:

  • The immersive and thought-provoking two-day event resulted in a number of dynamic solutions that 1N5 has committed to activating in the coming year.
  • Projects include an app which connects youth with immediate mental health resources, a festival which would rally the young community together for a day of activities and art related to mental health and a monthly subscription-style box containing self-care items and educational materials around mental health.
  • Participating youth reported feeling inspired and empowered by the process, with many stating that they would use human-centered techniques in future endeavors.
  • 1N5 has committed to leveraging the power of Human-Centered Design to guide its annual development of new, solution-based projects within the mental health space.
